London Public Service Network

The London Public Service Network (LPSN) provides secure inter-borough connectivity for London together with the opportunity for additional local applications and onward links via approved gateways to services in both Central Government and Health.

o    Basic LPSN Connectivity in place

o    Gateway to N3 and NHS applications in place

o    Gateway to GCSx agreed and ordered

o    London Emergency Planning system (LLAGNET) is live on LPSN

o    London Library Consortium’s Galaxy library system will soon be available

LPSN utilises the existing London Grid for Learning (LGfL) infrastructure and provides an initial 20Mbps bandwidth reserved and prioritised solely for Local Authority business use.

This is an exciting time for the LPSN project with the new GCSx gateway due to come on stream towards the start of July with a view to fully operational service towards the end of that month.

The gateway will open the door to a wide range of Government services including Tell us Once; JARD; CIS; GC mail; and YJB. The LPSN team are working closely with colleagues in Government Connect to ensure that all London Boroughs can take advantage of the GC Service as soon as the gateway is live. In addition the gateway will be provided at no additional cost to existing LPSN connected users.

With the LPSN gateway recommended as the preferred vehicle for London, there are never been a better time to sign up to LPSN, if you have not done so already.

Other significant LPSN Services include:

  • LLAGNET Emergency Planning system: This is a required application for the emergency Planning departments of all London authorities with the recommended method of connection being via the LPSN private circuits due to know issues with the Internet in times of Pan London incidents. The service has been fully tested by London Borough of Brent who were the first to switch to fully live operation.
  • DS Galaxy Libraries Consortium: This application is provided to approximately 10 London Boroughs and will be fed directly into the LPSN within the next couple of months removing the need for expensive direct connections to the Nottingham data centre.
  • N3 Gateway: A high capacity, resilient gateway to the N3 network has been a feature of the LPSN for over a year. Service costs are typically lower that that for an individual N3 circuit and have a greatly simplified management regime. An additional CoCo is require for the use of the N3 service

Don't forget that to use any active service on the LPSN you must have an approved Code of Connection. Some of the additional services such as GCSx and N3 also require additional approval. With the pressure now on to connect all boroughs to GCSx by March 2009, now is the time to get those approvals in place.
